Rise and Roar: Embracing Each New Day

As the sun rises each day, we are presented with a fresh start and countless opportunities. Yet, how often do we find ourselves wrestling with the comfortable embrace of our blankets, allowing excuses to hold us captive? This fourth Jewish law reminds us to summon the strength of a lion immediately upon waking, to rise quickly and decisively before the Evil Inclination whispers its seductive arguments against getting out of bed.

Reflecting on this teaching, I recognize a universal struggle: the daily battle against inertia. The law notes that, regardless of the season, our minds will conjure up familiar excuses to keep us cozy and asleep. “It’s too cold,” it might argue in winter, or “You deserve more sleep,” in summer. I can’t count the number of times I’ve woken up with the best intentions, only to remain ensconced in my covers, trapped by my own rationalizations.

Just yesterday, during lunch with friends, one person candidly asked for tips on rising early. Her companion shared her own strategy: an alarm that forces her to solve math problems to wake up. Yet, humorously, she admitted to becoming quite adept at doing math while still half-asleep. It was a relatable moment, one that sparked my involvement. I offered my own advice: “Make a list of morning tasks before bed. That way, when your mind tries to convince you to stay put, you can point to your list and remind yourself, ‘You said so last night!’”

However, there are days when even a list might not be enough to spur you into action. On those mornings, when doubts cloud your mind and the temptation to linger grows stronger, remember this law: the right thing to do is to dismiss the voices that urge you to waste your day. Instead, channel the fierce spirit of a lion and rise to face whatever lies ahead. Prepare a nourishing breakfast, savor your coffee, or take a moment to meditate. You have the power within you to make the most of your day.

The beauty of this law lies in its simplicity and its demand for action. It encourages us to confront our mornings with intention and strength, empowering us to embrace the day with all it has to offer. So, let’s awaken our inner lions and seize the opportunities that await us with courage and determination.

I hope this helps.
